The Help Desk: How Do I Boost My Instagram Following Organically?

Are you having a hard time growing your Instagram following organically? We know the struggle. However, we have some tricks up our sleeve that can make this job a little easier.

Before we get started, though, there's a couple of things that you need to keep in mind.

It only does your brand harm to buy followers.

This should be a no-brainer, but oftentimes the frustration that stems from being unable to organically grow your following has you trying anything and everything you can to get followers.

Buying followers is harmful to your profile because in some cases, Instagram might restrict real views on your account, (because it is, in essence, spam) or worse, your account may be shut down altogether.

You can't expect your following to grow over night.

Growing your Instagram following takes quite a bit of effort on your part. Don't expect it to be anything like a walk in the park. There's going to be content schedules to work out, data analysis, creative work, copy written and more.

That's not to mention the research you'll need to do to figure out who your target audience is and how to best appeal to them as customers.

In a nutshell? Don't expect to wake up and have 500 more followers than you had the day before. If it were that simple, agencies like ours definitely would not exist.

Step One: Find Your Audience

Who is your ideal customer? Is Instagram the right platform for your business? Where are they most likely spending their time and how can you capture their attention?

These are all questions you need to ask yourself at the beginning of the process so that you can better outline what needs to happen in order to reach your target audience.

Finding your target audience and promoting to those individuals saves you from wasting time, money and resources on continually pitching products to people who hold no interest for your company or product. There's absolutely no long-term benefits in doing that, which is why continually selling to only friends, family and acquaintances never works. You need to grow your audience by getting out there and finding out what they want from you and planning your content accordingly.

Step Two: Engage on Similar Content

And be the one with the answers! This isn't about likes or comments, this is about quality engagement with an audience similar to your own that will draw people in.

Don't do it for the sake of engagement alone, do it because you are working to become the authority in your industry.

Step Three: Use Relevant Hashtags

No, this does NOT mean to use 600 hashtags that are "trending" or whatever. Instead, use JUST A FEW hashtags that are relevant to your industry.

Your audience will use these to discover things that they might be interested in, which, if you're playing your cards right could be your product.

Step Four: Utilize Your Location When Possible

This works most efficiently if you have a store front or are at a popular Instagram location. When people look up what's happening in the area and click on the location, your pictures will show up and draw them into your profile!

Step Five: Relevant, Relatable, Fresh Content

ALWAYS. This is the key to the perfect Instagram page. You need to be posting regularly and your content needs to be relevant to the industry you're a part of, otherwise you'll drive people away either by disinterest or the lack of uniformity and reliability.

For example: If someone is following you for fitness tips, they're going to expect fitness tips. What they're not going to expect (or enjoy, as the case may be) is a picture of your favorite flavor cotton candy.

Growing your Instagram following takes time and effort and everyone has a different way of doing things, so some people might tell you "It's all about the content" or "It's all about the hashtags" but the truth is that it's all about a lot of little things that add up to make your feed worthy of relevant conversation and conversions.

Do you have any tricks you've used in the past to organically grow your Instagram following? We want to hear what worked for you!
