Instagram Now Lets You DM a Story to Your Friends

Helllllllo and welcome to This Week in Social Media, your newest way to stay up to date with everything happening in the social media world! Each Friday I’ll be bringing you the latest social media updates, tips, and inspiration to step up your social media game.

Hurricane Irma

Irma slammed into Florida at the beginning of this week causing massive destruction for many people.  Many jumped to posting about needing help while others from Tim Duncan to Spiderman posted asking how they could help during this devastating time.  Facebook activated the Safety Check for residents in the hurricane’s path which allowed friends and family to know their loved ones were doing okay. It was all truly impressive to watch the amount of people connecting….

While many people talking about the event can be helpful, it can also make social media cluttered with #fakenews. On Sunday, the Miami International Airport had to quickly respond to Irma misinformation. A video had been tweeted out stating it as Miami, while it was really Mexico City’s Airport.

Facebook Stories

Rumor has it Facebook is testing out sharing Instagram stories to Facebook.  I’m not sure how well the aggressive push for Facebook stories will go over as not many people on my feed have adapted to it yet..... 🤔

Bodega

Social media users went NUTS on Wednesday about the new startup company Bodega and they were NOT HAPPY. The good thing about social media for brands is that you can receive instant feedback, but in this case the majority of immediate feedback was not positive in the least. Bodega is a concept that is aiming to ‘replace’ corner stores with a vending machine like service. Albeit it does sound convenient, but it puts mom and pop shops at risk for lost business. It will be interesting to track their progress after their official launch on the west coast!

Apple Event

If you’re anywhere on social media you know that Apple unveiled the new iPhones and their features yesterday. The question is will you preorder a shiny new iPhone 8 or iPhone X?

iPhone 8:  Similar to the iPhone 7 this Iphone still has the home button but both sides are designed of glass.  A new “True Tone” display, wireless charging, and Portrait Mode on the plus are just some of the features.

iPhone X: With a bigger screen the home button is completely gone. You’ll now be able to unlock your phone with your face!! Scary or innovative?! Regardless, the camera will change your insta game.

What’s your call? Will you be ordering? Although I won’t be preordering (and am still slightly upset Apple has gotten rid of the Rose Gold #basic), I’m sure I’ll have one in my hand before my upgrade is up.

Check in next Friday for another weekly update!
