What are all these changes with Instagram?

Hey woah now, everyone calm down. Times are a changin’ and Instagram is following suit, but do not freak out just yet!

You might have seen recently that your friends, brands, and celebrities are asking you to ‘Turn on notifications’ so that you will be notified whenever they post something. Many users (me) found that being notified about every Instagram post was not as good of an idea as it sounds. Immediately I regretted the decision and then went and turned off the notifications for my personal account. I am just as guilty as anyone else who fell head first into the idea of the Instagram purge.  BUT! These changes are still coming, but they aren’t nearly as dramatic as we initially thought.

You’re familiar with Facebook right? Of course you are! Since Instagram is now owned by Facebook, we can see the effects of this new ownership. Now you are able to advertise on Instagram through the Facebook Power Editor, making Facebook an even more powerful advertising hub. Very recently, they have decided to take away chronological posting on Instagram, and are replacing it with an algorithm ranking users, and tailoring your feed to the content you want to see the most. This is just like your Facebook News Feed. Kevin Systrom, co-founder and chief executive of Instagram said that, “On average, people miss about 70% of the post in their Instagram feed. What this is about is making sure that the 30% you see is the best 30% possible.” This algorithmic approach seems to be a move in a positive and efficient direction, but it changes everything that we know about the social media platform. Now instead of worrying about the time you post to Instagram, you will be forced to produce more engaging and interesting content that your followers want to see, which is not a bad thing.

Another change that is ‘face’ing Instagram is the announcement of 60 second videos. Their reasoning for bumping up the time from 15 seconds to 60 seconds was that, “our users wanted it.” So Instagram is listening, tailoring, and changing to better serve their customers. (Even though the log out button disappeared for 2 days..)

????????

My prediction for the future of Instagram? Instagram Boosting. As the algorithm reaches the masses, brands will have money put money behind their posts if they want their followers to see and engage with their content. That is only this woman’s opinion, but I’d put about $5 behind it.

So you can freak out now.
